William Barber's sailors head design similar to that used on 20 cent, half eagle and eagle patterns of 1875 and dollar patterns of 1876. This design was also used in 1877 on dime, quarter and dollar patterns.

Only 2 examples are known and both are illustrated as follows:

1) Doughty 4/1891, Reed-Durham Museum (P248) ICG65 - Illustrated above. Click on the thumbnail image to see an enlargement.

2) Cogan in 1883, Garrett-JHU, Garrett I, M.B. Simons, Sieck-81 ANA, Evans-B/M 8/98 as NGC64, southern collection, Simpson collection - PCGS64, illustrated below.

This design was also struck in copper J1502/P1655 with 6 or 7 known.

An obverse die trial of just the head of Liberty, struck in red wax, JA1877-2/P3422 is known as is a complete reverse die trial in lead JA1877-3/P3425.
