This is an obverse die trial, in white metal, of the Sheldon 285 variety. It was struck outside the mint, possibly by Joseph Mickley or Montroville Dickeson from a die sold by the mint as scrap. It was used to coin J41/P6180 again outside the mint. I believe its first appearance was as lot 161 in S.H. and H.Chapman's 7/22/01 sale. Photo is a scan from the Bowers and Merena 3/97 sale.
