This is an example of the 1796 no stars quarter eagle struck in white metal from rusted dies. This is a restrike believed made by Joseph Mickley or Montroville Dickeson from dies sold as scrap by the Mint.
It is unique and is ex Chapman, Reed, Rice, Kosoff's 5/55 and 4/56 Melish sales, Stacks 3/91, Heritage 3/98, Mike Byers, Simpson-Heritage 9/20 - PCGS63

Editor's note: The Judd book 4th-7th editions in Appendix D - False Pieces list the 1796 Quarter Eagle in white metal as a cast copy. There is also a uniface example of just the obverse ex Kosoff's 3/61 Hydeman sale lot 971.
