Although described as regular dies trial pieces, these were deliberately struck for sale to collectors as part of complete off-metal sets.

Examples were struck as follows:

Copper J1179. This is unlisted in Pollock. If any do exist - one was in the Brenner-1914 ANS exhibit - they are probably masquerading as a regular issue proof.

Copper-Nickel J1180/P1321 with only 2 or 3 believed to exist. It is highly possible that these are some sort of mint error.

Aluminum J1181/P1322 with only 2 known as follows:

1) Bluestone 10/40, Hogan Pond-ANR 3/2005 - PCGS67, illustrated above

2) Farouk, Lauder-Doyle Galleries, 12/1983, Roger Johnson; James Sego, Heritage 1/2013 FUN, Simpson-Heritage 4/2021, Heritage 8/22 ANA - PCGS67, illustrated below courtesy of PCGS

One of these is ex Brenner-1914 ANS, Brand and the other is ex Woodin-Newcomer.

There is also a listing for this piece in nickel J1182/P1323. We believe this piece to be a mint error struck either on a planchet intended for a foreign coin or on a nickel 3 cent planchet. For more on this, click here.
